Yes, it can occur, but it seldom results in complete baldness in females. Females have decrease in density and gradual thinning over frontal scalp with preserved anterior hair line.
How will it progress?
- It progresses gradually over many years resulting in loss of hair over frontal scalp.
- In some people it can progress very fast over few years(5-6 years) leading to baldness over anterior half of scalp.
Can it be prevented?
Yes, one has to be started on oral and topical medication as soon as it is diagnosed . The treatment needs to be maintained till the time patient wants to preserve his/her hair. Discontinuation of treatment would otherwise result in progression of hair loss from the point patient stops medicines.
How is it treated?
- Treatment depends on the extent of hair loss and patient’s perception of his/her image.
- Initial stages of alopecia are treated with topical medications , oral tablets and PRP (platelet rich plasma) therapy
- Significant hair loss is managed at our clinic with hair transplant ( advanced FUE Technique)
